Confirming recent rumors, yesterday Facebook announced the 4th version of Instagram for iOS and Android. The news? Support for video recording.
In the first week of June, the still-new Vine, Twitter's app for sharing short videos, surpassed Instagram in shared links! The data comes from Topsy Analytics, and according to it, Vine generated 2.86 million shares on Twitter, while Instagram generated “only” 2.17 million links.

Besides that, Vine is the 2nd most popular free app on the App Store, and the 4th most downloaded on Google Play. Instagram ranks, respectively, 19th and 5th in the stores.
Facebook's inspiration from Twitter's app was so clear that video recording on Instagram ended up quite similar to Vine's: just press the button as many times as you want to record your clip. The real standout feature was the ability to edit video segments, the 13 exclusive filters, and the impressive image stabilizer.
To beat Vine, Instagram already has huge numbers on its side:
- 130 million users
- 16 billion photos already shared
- 1 billion likes per day
- 45 million photos per day
Facebook used all its might to quickly counterattack Twitter's app, making it clear it intends to keep its lead, even if that means getting “inspired” by the competition.
