Since 2016, Instagram's algorithm has decided the display order of posts based on user preferences, something that hasn't pleased many fans of the social network and has increasingly become a source of frustration for users.
With this in mind, Instagram recently announced that it will create three different feed models on its platform: Home, Following, and Favorites. With this new feature, users gain the freedom to decide how they want to view their feed.
To understand it better, here's how the 3 feed models will work:
[Home]
This is the default format everyone currently uses. It's controlled by Instagram's algorithm, which organizes posts on the timeline according to the user's interest in them. It also offers content suggestions from accounts you don't follow, plus plenty of ads.
[Following]
Here, you'll see content from the accounts you follow, with everything displayed in chronological order, with no interference from the algorithm. A long-standing request that Instagram has finally granted! Phew!
[Favorites]
In this feed style, also in chronological order, you'll only see posts from users you've marked as your "favorites." This gives people the option to prioritize photos and videos from accounts they really love and don't want to miss any updates from. So, profiles selected as favorites will appear first on the screen.
But what about ads, how will they work from now on?
As for performance, it's still too early to predict the consequences of this change. The updates are still in the testing phase, with no official launch date announced yet.
According to our CEO, Bruno Estrela, there's a factor worth watching closely regarding whether or not ads will be shown on these new feeds.
"Although it's still early to say for sure, it seems that, regardless of which path is chosen, we'll see changes in ad display dynamics and in the platform's conversion cost.
If ads remain exclusive to the original feed, we could see, in the medium term, a shift in user behavior, with preference migrating toward the chronological and customized feeds. This could lead to a decline in original feed usage, affecting advertisers' performance.
If the scenario involves ads appearing across all new feeds, it seems likely there will be a trend toward higher conversion costs due to a more qualified user base."
