Political, alcoholic beverage, and gambling ads are banned from the homepage.
In order to improve the experience for advertisers and the community, Google has revised its advertising policies on the world's largest and leading video social network, YouTube. Content that includes politics, alcoholic beverages, gambling, and drugs is now banned from the homepage due to a new company guideline.
"We constantly review our advertising guidelines to make sure they balance the needs of advertisers and users," says a Google spokesperson. As a result, promotions for candidates and parties will no longer be able to take advantage of the election period on the platform.
"Today, we are updating our guidelines to limit the categories of ads that can appear on YouTube's homepage. We believe this update will reinforce changes we made over the past year regarding the experience and improve browsing for all users," the spokesperson added about the news.
These changes are already in effect on YouTube, and it's worth noting that they were influenced by recent American election cycles. Ads and fake news were very prevalent during the 2016 election, and since then, major internet platforms have been working to prevent political advertising from once again influencing the political direction of society.
